Computer-created pictures purporting to depict Nicolás Maduro in custody after his capture by the United States have amassed many millions of impressions online.

The Way Fake Pictures of the President Surfaced Rapidly

Initial fake AI image apparently showing him led off a aircraft emerged shortly after. The picture was unpublished by any authoritative government accounts; it was instead posted on the platform X by an profile describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.

Verification involved the SynthID tool, confirming the picture was created or altered with AI tools.

Further AI-generated visuals started circulating in the following period, appearing to show additional perspectives of the leader in custody. Noticeable identifying marks on the graphics show they originated from an Instagram account called ultravfx.

SynthID confirms these additional images were similarly generated or edited Google AI.

Authentic Image Released but Fabrications Persisted

The former US president shared the initial authentic image of Maduro restrained aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. Yet following this confirmation was made public, synthetic images persisted online but were modified to include the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.

Digital forensics show these altered fabrications were originally uploaded on TikTok by a digital art account. Again, the AI-watermark detector confirms these subsequent pictures were created or altered generative artificial intelligence.
