Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin has declared he is pulling out from the Irish presidential election right away.

He was poised to be a candidate among three standing for the Irish presidency, together with Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys.

Yet, late Sunday he announced in a statement that he "erred that was not in keeping with my character and the standards he upholds."

"Taking all these considerations on board, I have decided to exit the presidential election contest with immediate effect and return to the arms of my family," he stated via a statement.
